Betty Davis, the funk singer who changed the landscape for female artists by busting social rules imposed on women and insisted on complete control of her image and recordings to stunning effect, has died at the age of 77.

Her death was announced on Facebook by  Betty – They Say I’m Different with the following statements.

Dear all, with great sadness we share with you the news that Betty Mabry Davis, after a brief illness, has transitioned into another space. She passed today in Pittsburgh – peacefully and with those who loved her by her side. Betty remained Queen Betty until the end – independent, fierce and beautiful. She left just as she came, on her own terms, burning bright and forging her path into the next world in the way she wanted. Her legacy is all around us. For those who wish to honor Betty’s life – we will announce more soon. Love / Phil, Damon & Giovanna.

“I am devastated to report that my dear friend, pioneering songwriter, singer and producer, Betty Davis, has transitioned out of this physical world. There was no pain or fear. I don’t have the words to express what Betty meant to me at this moment, but I will be writing more very soon. All I can say right now is that knowing Betty has been the greatest honor of my life. I love you, Betty. Thank you for sharing your beautiful presence with me. Your music and spirit will live on forever.”

Mike Rubin wrote : RIP Betty Mabry, better known as Betty Davis, forward-thinking fashion model, songwriter, & funk-rock bandleader. Though she thought of herself as “more of a projector” than a singer, her raspy, ecstatic snarls found their perfect framing on 3 mid-70s LPs

Abram Valdez said : Just saw the Betty Davis news. I was one of those poor saps that came late to her music. Mostly as a result of Mike Judge’s Tales from the Tour Bus. Hate that it took me so long to find it. last 20 years it’s just because of money

Chicken Tetrazzini said : So crazy Betty Davis died today because I was thinking about this album and how I wanted to listen to it again and also how it was cute that Miles put her on the cover of his album
