· “Carl Beck is the single most impactful man, most of us will EVER know” ~Brad Sloan Let that sink in for a second… wow! A fitting tribute to a man and his legacy. May I add: Carl “IS” the single most influential man I have ever known aside from my immediate family. He was, as to many, like a Father to me. I first met Carl when my family moved into Point of Woods and became his next door neighbor. 22 years of employment and many other years of friendship spent listening to his stories and making a few of our own along the way. He didn’t mind telling me when I was wrong, but like any good Father he always came back around to make sure I knew he cared and wasn’t just being a “boss”. He expected the very best of you and that made me a better man. A few memories that came flooding to mind. Gator games win or lose we had fun… Carl was a winner and didn’t mind telling people about the Gators. Come Monday if they lost. (See Blue Blazer below) Watching Dan Marino’s last game when the Jaguars beat them in the playoffs Making me drive “The Bus” for the first time after the interstate closed. We had to take a two lane road with ditches on both sides and bumper to bumper traffic… think a narrow version of cracker swamp road; he was in the phone with Doc and said “Ole Posey over here’s about to s*** diamonds he is so nervous.” He later disclosed “Adam if you can drive in those conditions for the first time, you can drive this anywhere.” Then proceeded to school me about life. The Blue Blazer (that is all I need to say, if you know, you know) Waffle House 3am, Atlanta Speedway… Tent City… Vegas has nothing on this place. You must be Gordon fans Flying to a Gator Game like we were the damn kings of the world. Escort to the games front gates by law enforcement. Looked at each other… boy we are big time… laughing like two year olds. For some time my nickname was “Dateline”. Customer came in, transmission leak, customer accuses us of “creating a leak”.. Dateline had just published a piece about snakes in the auto industry…trying to lower the temperature in the room I jokingly say “Sir, you are in Palatka, FL and you have been watching too much Dateline” Needless to say that didn’t go over well. After meeting with the client and Carl and getting a professional chewing. The client leaves… and he busts out laughing “Did you really say he watched too much Dateline” For the next I don’t know, year or so… that was me “Dateline” Didn’t realize how much I’d miss you. Love you boss, we will talk again someday. We all have stories to tell that are unique and if you all want to share them please do. He meant so much to me. He spread his love to so many people and animal’s alike. Rest easy my friend!
