I got the very sad news today that polar explorer Dixie Dansercoer died in a crevasse fall while guiding an expedition in Greenland. I first met Dixie in the spring of 2005 after his attempt to cross the Bering Strait with Troy Henkels. He stayed in Nome for several weeks after the expedition and we climbed in the Kigliuak Mountains and he joined me on an assignment to Little Diomede Island. Reflected in his goggles is Big Diomede Island, located on the Russian side of the Bering Strait. In 2008, Dixie invited me to join an international yacht-based expedition to Antarctica to retract the first scientific journey to the continent,‘In the Wake of the Belgica’. This is where I recognized Dixie’s boundless passion for polar regions and his ability to pull of logistically complex polar expeditions. My thoughts are with his wife, Julie Brown, and his four children during this time of loss.
Shocking loss for the polar community, but more importantly for his family. My deepest sympathies go out to them
