Dr. Adeline Fagan, age 28
Ob-Gyn resident
Houston, Texas
Died September 19, 2020
After a lengthy fight against Covid-19.
Thank you for your words below, Dr. Kathy MacNaughton Hance.
“All is not well with our world. The 28-year-old shining OB-Gyn resident, Dr. Adeline Fagan, has died from COVID-19.
“There are no words to describe the grief that her family is enduring.
“There are no words to describe the growing anger that I have, personally, as a parent, for those that are burying their children due to the inability and unwillingness of our nation to figure out how to get control of this pandemic.
“From her site:
If you can do one thing, be an “Adeline” in the world. Be passionate about helping others less fortunate, have a smile on your face, a laugh in your heart, and a Disney tune on your lips.”
We have GOT to step up and protect. As physicians who have finished residency, we have GOT to protect our resident physicians and all healthcare staff– advocate for PPE, virtual settings for meetings, ways to limit interaction with each other and patients.
There are so many ways to do interactions better and much of it is fairly easy and just involves changing habits, being creative, thinking outside the box.
Two shouldn’t be close together, sitting at a computer together. Shouldn’t be sitting in a room eating together w a mask off, especially small rooms! Small rooms shouldn’t have 5 (or 2) people in it just bc teaching has always been done like that. Few speak up and then the bad practices continue and those speaking up are considered paranoid. Often because there’s been no issue yet, practices are continued.
We don’t want to be in a position of having someone get sick. It’s so much better to have done more than to regret not having done enough. I’m angry when i think of hearing of residents (and anyone)close together, learning, eating together bc small work space.
It often doesn’t seem that their program faculty are encouraging separation, working hard to find new work spaces, setting up virtual for a senior to guide junior rather than to be sitting right next to each other, not discouraging eating together, so many other points that could be improved. Faculty docs are “too busy” plugging along w regular jobs, failing to think outside of the box. If we were in tech, there’d be so many fewer risks of the unnecessary stuff. We could go in, do quick physical, even do a lot of the talking to pt over phone. So much also is still to keep normal to please pt bc places worry about patient satisfaction.
I don’t know that any of these practices have anything to do with Dr. Fagan’s death but we don’t know they didn’t. And even if they didn’t, she would’ve been at risk for transmitting to others (who might not know, yet might have passed).
We will absolutely see more resident (and other doc) deaths over the months, especially after winter. Know that there’s already a huge lists of doc deaths and even larger including all healthcare workers.**We need to be angry and make those docs who have their head in the sand aware. And the CMOs/CEOs, everyone.
