Lisa Yee 2h · Not only was Floyd Cooper incredibly talented, but he was awesome cool, too. One time, I was at an event and wasn’t sure If he’d remember me. So I kept circling, working up my nerve to talk to him. I guess I wasn’t as stealth as I thought I was, because he started laughing and said, “Hi Lisa!” Rest in peace, Floyd.

Floyd Cooper. Children’s book illustrator

(More to come)
RIP dear Floyd Cooper,a friend, one of the finest of the black illustrators of children’s books , award-winner, who helped usher in the renaissance we have today. We did a book together Miz Berlin Walks, and he is gone from us much too soon: cancer and an opportunistic infection after surgery. He will be greatly missed by children’s book lovers of every color, by the Highlights Foundation whose board he was on for years, and by me.
That made me chuckle, Lisa. We were fortunate to know him and laugh with him, too. ☺️
I am so, so devastated to hear this. Such an extraordinary talent – and a good, good man…
