Joy Cardin 15h · Such a nice man, steady leader, and talented broadcaster. You may have heard Gene filling in for me on WPR and during pledge drives. I saw Gene recently at the memorial service for a mutual friend. We talked about how public broadcasting coped with Covid and the remarkable feat of keeping the stations on the air with staff working from home. He was looking forward to the return to a new normal. He kindly offered me a long-delayed tour of WPR’s remodeled studios sometime. Thank you, Gene. For everything. Everyone in his public media family is stunned and saddened by his sudden loss. Peace and comfort to all of my colleagues and most especially to Gene’s wife Ruth. A celebration of Gene’s life will be held at a later date.

Gene was such a warm, kind man. We often talked about our cats. I am so sad, and such a great loss for Public Broadcasting.Erik Ernst
A sad day for public media in Wisconsin. No one will disagree that the one word that first comes to mind when you think about Gene is “nice.” Sure, he was also funny, a talented broadcaster and a leader in public media, but I will carry his universal “niceness” with me as a legacy to strive for. We could all use a bit more “nice,” especially since we lost a lot of it this past weekend.
