Today I learned that my friend, and stalwart member of the Corktown community Greg Mudge passed away. To say that I was blindsided is an understatement. Greg was the embodiment of a kind soul, a paragon of hospitality, and always a friendly face. No matter what mood you were in when you ran into Greg, you immediately started smiling without even knowing it. Greg was a humble dude, a sandwich virtuoso and just an amazing guy. If the world was full of Greg Mudge’s we’d all be living in a pretty sweet place. RIP brother… I wish I got to hang with you more than I did and I’ll cherish the times we had together.

Many times I actually listened when he spoke.
My mother, Gail suffered many years through cancer. Her and I made regular appointments to Henry Ford. When the grueling infusion/appointment schedule allowed, I took her to Mudgie’s.
She would light up. I would “let” her have a beer and share a massive sandwich. She LOVED IT.
What she loved the most was Greg. We would hear him yelling on the line. Then, like it wasn’t a lunch rush, come out to say hello. She was so excited to see him. Covered in pickles and pastrami, he would bend down and ask her about her sandwich and how she was feeling.
She felt like royalty and would almost beg to go for lunch if she was up to it. She wasn’t well enough to go, near the end but she never stopped asking to see him. By name.
Thank you, Greg. You will be missed by so many. Not the least of which, my family.

I remember when he was a server at McNally’s. I’ve been going to Mudgie’s for years. Greg was always friendly and fun. This is incredibly sad. Heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.
