I’ve thought of Ms. Braverman often since I was in a writing group she led about four years ago at Op.Cit. Books in Santa Fe. I was way over my head–my writing style is nothing like the kind of writing she pushed the group to create–kind of like worshiping a star you know you’ll never touch, recognizing its awesome power and presence. A woman totally dedicated to her muse. I’m saddened to learn of her passing. I hope she has someone who can get her remaining unpublished work out into the world. The publishing world didn’t fully appreciate her genius–yes, I think she needs to be recognized as a literary genius.

She changed the lives of many writers including this one. Rest In Peace, Kate, a character in a landscape with an attitude like no other, while we continue to consider, always, the implications.

Last night Kate Braverman died in her sleep. Some newer people in the Los Angeles literary world might not know who she is — but among the longtime writers and poets, Everyone knows: a major literary light whose novels and poetry offered a fierce new take on Los Angeles.
