Bill, who acted a Sy Benson the head writer of a 1950s sketch comedy show, in the classic My Favorite Year (1982), passed away in California.
Macy was born Wolf Martin Garber in Revere, Massachusetts in May 1922 to Mollie (née Friedopfer) (1889-1986) and Michael Garber (1884-1974), a manufacturer. He was raised Jewish in Brooklyn, New York, and worked as a cab driver before pursuing an acting career. According to his profile on Wikipedia.

Most Know Him as Maude’s Husband Arthur but Bill Appeared in over 70 TV and Films including 1980s Serial, Movers & Shakers, Bad Medicine and Tales From the Darkside.
It hasn’t hit the news yet, but personal friends of actor Bill Macy are reporting he died this evening at age 97.
You may remember him as the inventor of the ‘opti-grab’ in The Jerk, from his later appearances on Seinfeld…but most likely as Walter Findlay, long suffering husband on 137 episodes of Maude.
