Long before I met Phil and Lynne Brower, I was familiar with and had participated in and was blessed by many of their cantatas. The way we met attests to my view of them as “down to earth,” “unpretentious.” Just an “ordinary couple” called to serve the Lord through music and musical production.
Krisy, a former member of the children’s choir that I directed, asked me if she could use our indoor swimming pool to host a surprise 16th Birthday Party for a close friend of hers, Shannon Brower. I said of course. Lynne arrived and introduced herself as, Shannon’s mom, and stated that Phil was tied up in a musical production meeting but would be arriving soon. It didn’t dawn on me who they were until Phil arrived. I was quite embarrassed. Lynne graciously commented that it was refreshing to know that I was allowing a group of teenage kids that I didn’t know into my home for birthday party for a teen that I didn’t know.
When we started attending Calvary church Phil was the Music, Worship and Outreach pastor. I appreciated the variety of songs that he and the worship committee selected and the many meaningful, thought-provoking tidbits or illustrations that he shared each Sunday to prepare our hearts for the message. In addition to the many other ministries in which he was involved , Phil the creator and producer of “Festival of Lights” (FOL) a live theater stage production that Calvary volunteers put on each Christmas to present the Gospel message and modern-day application for unbelievers. I thoroughly enjoyed being a member of the backstage crew. I am sure that some form of the above scenario was repeated over and over for many years and throughout many ministries and projects in which Phil was involved.
Phil’s promotion to heaven has left a huge void here on earth. His physical presence will be especially missed by his family and the many folks who worked and ministered with him. For those of us who knew him casually will miss him and his work and ministry – his creativity, his multiple gifts and talents he used in serving his Lord and Savior.
