Rod Gilbert Death – Obituary News : Hockey Hall of Famer & Rangers legend has died at 80.
We are sad to report that Rod Gilbert has passed away, according to the following statements posted on social media on August 22. 2021.
Hockey Hall of Famer & Rangers legend, Rod Gilbert has passed away at the age of 80. Gilbert played all 18 of his NHL seasons with the Rangers from 1960-1978, scoring 1,021 points in 1,065 career games. He was a 2-time all-star, the 1976 Masterton Trophy winner, and was the first Ranger to ever have their number retired.
The Montreal native is 1st all-time in goals, 2nd all-time in assists, 1st all-time in points & 3rd all-time in games played in Rangers franchise history. Rest In Peace to one of the greatest New York Rangers’ of all-time.
Gilbert’s family confirmed the death to Rangers on Sunday. The team didn’t provide details.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Rod Gilbert — one of the greatest Rangers to ever play for our organization and one of the greatest ambassadors the game of hockey has ever had,” Rangers owner James Dolan said in a statement. “While his on-ice achievements rightly made him a Hall of Famer, it was his love for the Rangers and the people of New York that endeared him to generations of fans and forever earned him the title, ‘Mr. Ranger.'”

This is crushing. Rod Gilbert has passed away. I can’t even explain how much he and his teammates meant to me as a young hockey fan, but Rod was the Rangers and vice versa. So involved with the NY community and a huge star in this town back in the day. A wonderful person. RIP.
