Death – Obituaries : (MARKET NEWS) : Suny New Paltz Student Death : Katherine Vollmer Died Hiking at Hasbrouck Park.
A 20-year-old understudy at SUNY New Paltz slipped off a cliff and plunged 150 feet to her death while hiking with friends at Hasbrouck Park , police and school authorities said Tuesday.
Katherine Vollmer and some of her schoolmates at the college in upstate New York went exploring old concrete buckles and trails in Hasbrouck Park Monday evening — and got lost, in the long run ending up at the edge of a cliff , police specialists said.
The “unsanctioned hiking group” began walking along the precipice in the hopes of returning to their vehicles.
At around 9:50 p.m., the young lady lost her balance and fell, according to s statement released by the Kingston Police Department.
The area she dropped down to was “only accessible by an experienced rope team,” police said.
“Because of the absence of light and poor climate conditions it was chosen that the recovery of the student would need to hold up until daylight,” cops said.
At the point when rescue team discovered Vollmer Tuesday morning, it was resolved she had “experienced extreme injury from the fall” and was declared dead at the scene.
New Paltz President Donald Christian, who recognized the student in an announcement Tuesday, said she was a visual arts major who had transferred to the school from Monroe Community College this fall.
“We extend our deepest sympathy to Katherine’s family and friends and to the students, faculty and staff who knew her,” Christian said.
The following are some tributes posted on social media to honor the life and the legacy of the deceased.
I don’t really have many words because it doesn’t feel real that I have lost a sister and a best friend. Katherine was a light in everyone’s life. She was smart, and witty, and sarcastic most of the time. I often noticed myself looking up to her even though she was my little sister.
6 months ago, we went on a trip together to Iceland. I’m so glad I got to experience the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen with her. It hurts to know there’s so many other places she wanted to see but will never get to.
She saw the world differently and was able to capture it through a camera. I’ll look back on these beautiful pictures she took for the rest of my life.
To all of you who know Sue Vollmer, please keep her and her family in your prayers. Her 20 year old niece Katherine Vollmer, a student at SUNY at New Paltz in upstate NY, was killed in a tragic fall off a 150 foot cliff while hiking with friends. Sue’s brother Jim a frequent visitor to Sunset Park lives in Rochester with his wife Amy. Kathrine had 2 sisters Kimberly and Claire.
