Tessa Dettman
Jan 23, 1995 – Aug 19, 2020
Musical theater lost a gifted young talent with the passing of Tessa Dettman on Aug. 19 at the age of 25.
A recent graduate of Northwestern University, she earned a Joseph Jefferson Award nomination for Best Principal Performer in a Musical for her role as Jo March in Brown Paper Box Company’s production of “Little Women.” A key role in the premier production of “Proxy” by the Underscore Theater Company was another highlight of her brief professional career.
A standout student at Northwestern, she performed in nine productions on her way to a theater degree with a certificate in musical theater. Blessed with a beautiful voice and a no-holds-barred approach to acting, Tessa gave herself over completely to every part and worked tirelessly to perfect her craft. Compassionate, outspoken and principled, she was fiercely devoted to her friends and family.
Confident in her beliefs as well as her talents, she could be stubborn at times. She was always right, even when she was wrong, but she was always right. She loved her shoes almost as much as she loved her clothes, and she loved her kittens even more. Tessa lived every day of her life to the fullest and would do or try anything. She will be missed and loved forever by the legions who adored her.
Tessa was the daughter of Dr. Gary Dettman and Dr. Martha Basile and the beloved cousin, niece and great-niece of the Dettman and Basile families. There will be a private gathering to celebrate her life. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family suggests a donation to Paws Chicago. https://www.pawschicago.org/

She may not have been here very long, but she touched many lives and truly lived the life that she had. How many of us could say that if we were to die tomorrow.
