Yaw Owusu-Boaitey has died, according to a statement posted online on May. 21, 2020.
We learned of the deceased through the following tribute posted on social media.,
“What an incredible race we mustangs ran together.” – Yaw Owusu-Boaitey
I think we’re all at a loss for words today. We’ve lost a friend and an exceptional member of the community. The one who always lead cheers at our volleyball games. Who convinced me to submit my artwork to the literary magazine even when I lacked the confidence to do so. The one when speaking at graduation prompted everyone to say “he’s gonna be president one day.” An amazing musician, student, and classmate. Yaw you were nothing but supportive of everyone and I hope you realized people couldn’t help but smile and be happy when they were around you. Rest easy.
I didn’t really know how to string my thoughts together — and I still don’t know if it feels right. But I hope that these words can still speak volumes to who Yaw was and the legacy he leaves with us.
Yaw Owusu-Boaitey was not only a scholar of fantastic merit and ambition, but a man of unprecedented character. He was an inspiration and a dedicated leader. His driven passion, his thoughtfulness, his bright energy, and his unrelenting will to do good have always empowered me — and many others — in the last 3 years that I’ve known him at UMBC.
I’m so thankful to have had the honor of being his friend and to have served our community at his side. I will always hold our memories of contagious laughter and pondering about the world in my heart.
Rest easy 👑 You’ve done so much good. I miss you and I love you.
